Hiwassee Lake
The closest large reservoir to Murphy, with boating, fishing, paddling, national-forest shoreline, and several recreation areas.
Apalachia Reservoir
A narrow, quiet reservoir west of Murphy. It suits people seeking less traffic, but public access and nearby services are limited.
Lake Chatuge
A developed lake spanning North Carolina and Georgia, with marinas, rentals, public recreation, beaches, fishing, and waterfront neighborhoods.
Lake Nottely
A large Blairsville-area reservoir with boating, fishing, rentals, public ramps, shoreline homes, and Poteete Creek camping.

A vast reservoir bordering Great Smoky Mountains National Park, known for remote coves, fishing, boating, and Fontana Dam.
Lake-property reality
Dock permission: A shoreline does not automatically include a permitted dock—or permission to build one.
TVA and other easements: Shoreline restrictions can affect clearing, structures, access, and future plans.
Seasonal water levels: Some reservoirs draw down substantially. Visit in more than one season when possible.
Flood information: Check current maps, elevation certificates when relevant, insurance availability, and lender requirements.
Road and driveway access: Waterfront terrain can mean steep, narrow, private, or shared access.
Utilities and internet: Verify well, septic, power, broadband, and cell service at the specific property.
Short-term rentals: County rules, deed restrictions, HOA rules, septic capacity, and insurance all matter.
